Governance Structures
School Governance Structures
Mary Angela Shaughnessy, SCN — Louisville, Kentucky
Although it has been said that there are no committees in heaven, here on earth no such shortage exists.
If you happen to be in the process of trying to open up a new school or are trying to reorganize an existing school in a better way — you know exactly to what that first sentence refers. And if the questions you've encountered trying to accomplish either of those two goals seem to multiply faster than you can find the answers you need — there is someone you can call.
To learn about various types of governance structures that might be right for your school's needs — contact me, Mary Angela Shaughnessy, to arrange a free initial consultation, in person or by phone.
In my practice as an lawyer, I provide legal advice and services related to school governance structures to school administrators, clergy, board members, directors, trustees, owners and others throughout the state of Kentucky. I also serve as an advisor and as an advocate for a similar range of clients nationwide. I am helped in these efforts by the more than 30 years I have spent working as an educator and school official.
Questions that may need to be asked and answered before choosing a governance structure include:
- Is the school privately sponsored or is it owned by a parish or diocese?
- What do articles of incorporation require?
- What issues do the school's bylaws need to address?
- What should the organizational chart look like?
- Who will have the final authority or jurisdiction over policy-making decisions?
- Are there unusual financial, insurance or liability issues that need to be considered?
Although much of my work involves private sector and religious schools and educational issues, I have helped administrators and officials of charter and community-sponsored schools in the public sector as well.
