Administrative Issues
Administrative Issues: Trusting Your Instinct
Mary Angela Shaughnessy, SCN — Louisville, Kentucky
With standardized testing, state and federal laws, regulations and curriculum requirements, budget shortfalls, and increasingly diverse student bodies with an ever-expanding range of specialized needs — the administrative issues faced by principals, boards, sponsors and others in the education system have never been more challenging.
And while many problems can be resolve by trusting your instincts, knowing how to respond to some of these problems can be difficult at best, without the advice of a lawyer.
As an attorney — I put more than three decades of experience at all levels of teaching to use in providing information and legal advice on complex administrative issues to schools and school officials nationwide.

Too Many Hats, Not Enough Hours in the Day
Although your two primary responsibilities as an administrator are to supervise and ensure the safety of everyone in the school, and to supervise your teachers — you and I both know that supervisory responsibilities often take a backseat to the day-to-day demands of putting out fires and dealing with administrative issues.
As part of my practice, I regularly advise teachers, administrators and other school-related officials nationwide on matters such as teacher supervision, harassment in the workplace, government reporting requirements, screening prospective teachers and other employees, relevant state and federal legislation, dealing with marginal teachers and more.
